Letters and Sounds (Phase One)
In Nursery we use Phase One of the Letters and Sounds phonics program. The progression of skills taught through this program will prepare the children for the Read, Write, Inc phonics program used from Reception to Year 2.
Our phonics work falls largely within the Communication, Language and Literacy areas of learning from the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, but also covers other areas of learning particularly Personal, Social and Emotional Development and also Creative Development through the use of music to develop crucial early language and listening skills.
Phase One activities are arranged under the following seven aspects:
Aspect 1: General sound discrimination - environmental sounds
Aspect 2: General sound discrimination - instrumental sounds
Aspect 3: General sound discrimination - body percussion
Aspect 4: Rhythm and rhyme
Aspect 5: Alliteration
Aspect 6: Voice sounds
Aspect 7: Oral blending and segmenting
Enjoying and sharing books
Children benefit hugely from exposure to books from an early age. In Nursery, lots of opportunities are provided for children to engage with books that will ignite their imagination and interest and begin their love of reading. They are encouraged to choose and peruse books freely as well as sharing them when read by an adult.
