"...forever be inspired."

Our Intent

At Sir Francis Hill we have built an Art curriculum which develops learning, experimentation, curiosity and creativity, resulting in pupils having a greater knowledge and understanding of how skills can be applied in their own art work. They have the opportunity to learn about a range of famous artists, various styles and genres and understand art throughout history. Children are encouraged to develop their skills through experimenting with a range of materials, tools and media to create their individual, inspired pieces of art work.

Our Implementation

At Sir Francis Hill, we have a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum. Artistic skills and knowledge in Foundation Stage is taught through the EYFS objectives. Through Years 1 to 6, we use the programmes of study planned through the Cornerstones programme, integrated with additional creative planning linked to other areas of our curriculum. This sometimes includes links to texts covered in English, looking at illustrations and book art work.

Throughout the year teachers plan the progression of skills and knowledge, building on these throughout the topics in an academic year and across a Key Stage.

Children have access to key knowledge, language and meanings in order to understand and readily apply to their work in Art and across the wider curriculum. Lessons are planned in order for children to develop their independent thinking, using key language throughout. We value the use of sketchbooks throughout Key Stage 1 and 2 to build and develop key skills as they progress through school. These are used as part of the assessment of the child, alongside discussion, observation and final pieces of work.

We enrich the children's experiences by providing educational visits and visitors. These are planned to develop cultural capital and provide the children with access to high quality art and artists.

Art is celebrated in school through year group exhibitions and work within the community.

Our Impact

Throughout their time at Sir Francis Hill, the children will be exposed to high quality art teaching and visual pieces. When they leave in Year 6, children will have the knowledge of key artists, styles and vocabulary to take with them into their next stage of learning. They will have an understanding of what it means to be an "artist". They will have the confidence to create pieces of art work in different mediums and be able to express techniques they have used to create it. The children will have developed skills in resilience and patience while planning, making and evaluating their art work.  As artists, the children will be able to develop their skills beyond school and apply their learning to every day life.

Fundamentally, the children at Sir Francis Hill will have got messy, been creative and will forever be inspired.
