Cornerstones Curriculum
At Sir Francis Hill we use the Cornerstones Curriculum as a driver to support our delivery of the art and design, design technology, geography, history and science national curriculum. Cornerstones is broad and balanced, knowledge rich primary curriculum. Its content is delivered through a range of subject-specific projects, which last either a full or half term. The Cornerstones Curriculum is led by 10 central Big Ideas. These are the overarching aims.
The Big Idea is directly linked to the curriculum subject and is delivered through relevant concepts (abstract idea within a subject) and aspects (particular part or feature of a subject). To ensure coverage each concept or aspect is then matched to the relevant programmes of study, ensuring full coverage of the national curriculum : art and design, design and technology, history, geography and science. These concepts and aspects are then broken down into smaller component parts to form a cohesive progression framework. This runs from Nursery to year 6 and includes knowledge and skills that children need to know and be able to do in order to make progress. Teachers can then decide to make further adaptions, with suggestions given on our SFH MTPs to support them with this. Teachers are also directed as to the key knowledge and key vocabulary so that they can ensure focus during the project and provide opportunities for the children to retain and recall. The curriculum is structured through sequential lesson plans and the content of the projects delivers an ambitious, broad and balanced curriculum.
