Homework

Year 5 Homework Overview

Maths & English

This year, your child will receive weekly Maths and English homework via our online learning platform, Atom School. Homework will be set every Friday and is due the following Friday. Every other week, your child will also bring home some talk homework linked to our 'Writing Adventure', which takes place every other Friday.

Each child will receive a unique username and password to log in. If your child hasn’t received theirs yet, it will be issued shortly.

To support your child with Atom School, you’ll need to set up a free Parent Portal. Please note: while Atom offers paid products, the features needed for homework are entirely free.

Setting Up Your Parent Portal

When your child’s Atom School account was created, you may have received an email with a magic link to set up your Parent Portal.

If you didn’t receive this link:

Alternatively:

  • Log in to your child’s Atom School account.
  • You’ll be prompted to enter your email address to receive an activation link for your Parent Portal.

If you experience any issues, please contact a member of the Year 5 team for assistance or the atom support team.

Reading

We recommend that your child reads daily for at least 20 minutes. This can be a school library book, which can be exchanged during our weekly library visit, or a book from home.

Not sure what your child should be reading? Take a look at the Top 100 Recommended Reads for Year 5 from The Reader Teacher for inspiration.

Spellings

Each week your child will focus on a particular rule or pattern during their spelling lesson. Please support your child by helping them learn how to apply these rules or patterns when they bring their spellings home each week. You'll also find the Bronze, Silver, and Gold word lists below — can your child master all of these by the end of Key Stage 2?

Topic Work

In the Autumn term, our topic is Dynamic Dynasties. Under this section on the class page, you’ll find optional home learning activities that complement our classroom learning. These are not compulsory but are a great way to extend your child’s understanding and enthusiasm for the topic.
