Geography

"The study of geography is about more than just memorising places on a map. It's about understanding the complexity of our world".

                - President Barack Obama.

Geography Policy.

Curriculum Intent

At Sir Francis Hill Community Primary School (SFH), geography education is fully inclusive to every child. Our intent for geography is to provide a broad, balanced, and differentiated curriculum; ensuring the progressive development of geographical concepts, knowledge, and skills; and for the children to develop a love for geography. Furthermore, we aim to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Teaching should equip pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources, and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth's key physical and human processes.

Geography teaching at SFH has a wide application to everyday life, not just through experience in the classroom but also with the use of fieldwork and educational visits. The curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable, throughout their time at SFH and also to their further education and beyond. Improving children's social capital.

Implementation

We implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school to ensure high standards of teaching and learning in Geography. Geography is taught through our Cornerstones curriculum, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum. At SFH, we ensure that geography has the same importance given to it as the core subjects, as we feel this is important in enabling all children to gain 'real-life' experiences.

Teachers plan lessons using the progression of knowledge and skills document alongside the Cornerstones' long-term plan and medium-term plan.

Impact

Within Geography, we strive to create a supportive and collaborative ethos for learning by providing investigative and inquiry-based learning opportunities. Children therefore gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of each unit of work covered throughout the school. Our geography curriculum is high quality, well thought out, and is planned to develop progression.

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Assessing the children's understanding of topic-linked vocabulary before and after the topic is taught, including making links to the previous topic's work.
  • Summative assessment of pupil discussions about their learning.
  • Images and videos of the children's practical learning.
  • Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil's voice).
  • Book scrutiny.
  • Marking of written work in books.
