Spring - Misty mountains, winding rivers

Misty Mountains:

Mighty mountains peak above the morning mists, imposing and eternal, rocky outcrops at their feet. Discover how these giants are formed, as a fold or a block, a dome or a plateau. Follow the water cycle’s course from peak to valley and meet the exceptional tribes of the hostile Himalayas. Then plan a mountain expedition that is eco friendly and as safe as can be. But look out. What’s that by that tree? Its footprints are huge. Have we found the Yeti?

Winding Rivers:

From humble beginnings, the river flows down the mountain and into the sea. Pull on your wellies and wade right in. How deep does it go and how fast does it travel? What soil types can you find by the river? Which animals make their homes there? Let’s get down to the river bank and find out. Now hop on an imaginary boat and travel some of the world’s most majestic rivers – the Ganges, the Thames, the Amazon and Nile – and keep a journal as you follow their course. Time to investigate. As part of the local news team, it’s your task to track down the source of some mystery pollution. Where did it come from and who is to blame? Let’s meander through the world of rivers, taking a dip into their watery world.

Science

States of Matter: This project teaches children about solids, liquids and gases and their characteristic properties. They observe how materials change state as they are heated and cooled, and learn key terminology associated with these processes.

Grouping and Classifying: This project teaches children about grouping living things, known as classification. They study the animal and plant kingdoms and use and create classification keys to identify living things.

Art

We have 2 projects this term: Animal and Vista.

In the Animal project children learn about the historical and cultural portrayal of animals in art. They study the visual qualities of animals through sketching, printmaking and clay modelling.

In Vista, children learn about the techniques that artists use when composing landscape images, such as colour and atmosphere.
